On Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st October, the legendary Pacific Paddle Games took place. This international competition held this year in California at Dana Point is very much the unofficial World Championships of Stand Up Paddle Race. All the big specialists in the discipline were present, including a number of Frenchies, among them the Teulade brothers and Martin Vitry, racing for the Oxbow team.
The board size of choice for both long distance and beach race for all the top riders present was a 14’. At this spectacular, one-of-a-kind event, Saturday was filled with a quick-fire succession of heats and qualifiers, with everyone hoping to grab one of the 20 places available in Sunday’s super finals. It was obvious from the outset that Martin was in tip-top form, qualifying for the finals in outstanding 2nd and 4th place.
Sunday’s program was packed with action, with the long distance race setting off early in the morning, and followed a few hours later by the Technical (Beach) race. Martin gave it everything in both disciplines, digging deep and delivering the goods. He more than held his own against the world’s best, managing a Top 10 finish in both categories
And the result of all his efforts: in the combined standings for the PPG overall results and titles, Martin finished in 7th place overall at this prestigious and legendary paddle board event, the second highest placed Frenchie, an exceptional performance given the general quality and level of the other racers.
On the way back to France, Martin said to us:
« I felt in great form physically from the moment I arrived in California, I was ready to give it everything, this is the type of event I love and really suits me best. Added to which, there were plenty of Frenchies over there this year, which helped create a kind of communal spirit, it was almost like being back home. The Pacific Paddle Games week-end is incredibly demanding, given the race program and the general level of the riders, you’ve got to be 100% on your game every minute of every race. My goal was to make a top 10 finish in this, the biggest event of the year. I achieved my goal and I’m totally stoked about that! »
This great finish, achieved on a set of brand new 2018 Oxbow board designs, is confirming the good technical design decisions of the Oxbow R&D team and the quality of their Racer 2018 boards.
